Pavement plants

The story

A wide variety of plant species flower between tiles and bricks. They help to retain water, cool down the city and attract insects and birds. In this way they fulfill an important role in the urban environment. Nevertheless, they are often seen as a nuisance and eradicated. But is it not the stones that are misplaced and put in a place where they do not belong?

Each of the six paintings shows a different type of pavement, with their own plants that break the geometrical pattern. To restore our balance with nature, it is time to let nature grow again. Humans have become very proficient at deciding which types of nature are allowed to flourish on a certain spot. This has disturbed the natural dynamic balance within ecosystems. A first step to overcoming this disconnection with nature is to appreciate it right under our feet.

Collaboration

For this project I collaborated with the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. In 2021 my paintings were exhibited in their winter garden. In 2024 they formed the exhibition “Natuur om bij stil te staan” in the natural history museum in Rotterdam.

The oil paintings measure 100x100cm and are available for € 2950 each (framed).

Postcards (13,5×13,5 cm) of the paintings are available for € 10 per set of six or € 2 per card. Please send me an email via the contact form to order them.
